    Augmented Reality

In this project we worked with the development of a interactive concept story that were to be mediated on a mobile device while the user navigates around the city of Aalborg.

    Case Study

Keywords on what we worked with in this project: brainstorming, bodystorming, acting out, sketching, picture scenarios, concept development, storytelling, mock-ups & paper prototypes, user experience and augmented reality.

    The Task

In this project I worked with 4 fellow students on the development of a fictive story that were to be mediated by the use of augmented reality on a mobile device.

    Qualifications

The work in this project required skills in our innovative abilities as we were to develop a whole new story, but being innovative is not something that can just be done. We therefore used range of creative methods that were said to support innovation to develop our concept story that “augments the city with fiction” (link is 3,5mb pdf). The work with these method and the development of the story provided me with an understanding of the various possibilities there are for supporting innovation and creativity. It also provided me with an idea of how to get from the multifarious ideas to the development of specific story and how to demonstrate the concept using mock-ups, prototypes and storyboards.

    Results

The result of this project was fictive story that would be possible experience using a mobile device while the user were walking around the city of Aalborg as told by the system. The story provided the user with choices along the storyline such that the story became interactive. The story “plays” with the Danish word “Bjørnetjeneste” which has two meanings:

    - An action that is well-meant, but does more harm than good
    - An action that is a great help for someone; big favor

This “play” with that word gives the story a rather authentic feeling, and the evaluation with users afterwards went quite well.

The result of this project also lead to publication of a scientific paper that I am co-authoring. The article is called:

“Bjørnetjeneste: Using the city as a backdrop for location based interactive narratives” The main authors are: Jeni Paay og Jesper Kjeldskov. The paper will be published in the book ”From Social Butterfly to Engaged Citizen” MIT Press 2011.
